Annette Labedzki Biographypainter from (Canada)I was born in St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. A few years later we moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I spent my childhood and early adulthood. However, I was always extremely homesick and finally in 1982 I moved back to Vancouver, B.C. I love living near the ocean. It gives me a great feeling of freedom, which influences my painting immensely. I remember the first award I received was in Art class in grade 10. The superintendent of the Winnipeg School Board bought one of my paintings! I was so excited! Nine months after moving to Vancouver, I met my future husband. He was a Polish Navy Officer, named Andrew, who had jumped ship in 1982. We are married and have been together for twenty-five years. We have one son, Johnny, and three crazy cats! The stability of my marriage has given me the emotional support and courage to pursue my art career on a full time basis. Before attending The Emily Carr College of Art and Design, I spent a whole intense year drawing from nature and studying human anatomy; figurative drawing and painting. I especially loved drawing portraits. I enjoyed going beyond the face and capturing the person’s soul. I received my BFA at Emily Carr College of Art and Design and spent another year studying philosophy at The University of British Columbia. During this time my husband learned English, drove a taxi, received his BMLS degree (Bachelor of Medical Lab. Sciences) and received his DMD degree (dentist). After graduating from University we bought a dental practice in northern B.C. Again, I felt terribly homesick for Vancouver. I wanted to turn back before our UHaul was even unloaded. We felt isolated and two years later we were back in Vancouver. The valuable lesson I learned from this experience was that I must live near the ocean. It is vitally important for me as an artist. The ocean gives me great inspiration, peace and a wonderful sense of freedom. Another award I received was First Prize at the Pacific Northwest Annual Show at the University of Oregon, U.S.A. The University bought my painting and it is now in their permanent collection. I spend my days drawing, painting, creating collages and I hope to do so for many years to come.
